The
English Literary Society
organises various events, under the banner of the Department of English, Zakir
Husain Delhi College, which help to nourish our students’ academic life, while
also facilitating their creative activities. The ELS is committed towards
facilitating our students’ academic and creative endeavours. The ELS activities
are managed by the students under the supervision of the ELS convener who is appointed by the
department. The ELS convener is always a member of the faculty.

English Literary Society Report for the Academic
Year 2018-19

English
Literary Society of Zakir Husain Delhi College organised a number of literary
and academic activities in the academic session 2018-19. The highlight of the academic
session was Rhapsody’19, the annual literary festival of English Department,
held on 26 February 2019. The annual festival featured a panel discussion on “Activist
Theatre: Challenges Today”. Renowned theatre experts Mr. Sanjay Kumar, actor
and director Pandies Theatre, Mr. Arvind Gaur, founder of the theatre group
Asmita Mr. Sudhanwa Deshpande, actor and director at JANAM, and Ms. Sanyukta
Saha, founder of the theatre group Aaghaz were invited to speak on this topic.
Other literary events such as script-writing competition, micro tales, poetry
presentation, declamation, and popular culture quiz were the attractions of the
fest.

Literary Society, Zakir Husain Delhi College, in collaboration with English
Literary Society, Zakir Husain Delhi College (Evening) organised one-day international
students’ seminar on the topic “Myth and Archetypes, and Their Workings in Drama”
on 27 February 2019. Michelle Hensley, Visiting Fulbright Specialist and founder
of the theatre company ‘Ten Thousand Things’, and Kira Obolensky, Award Winning
Playwright and lecturer at University of Minnesota’s MFA programme delivered
the key-note speech. Noted theatre scholars Dr. Vinod Verma, Associate
Professor, Maharaja Agrasen College, Dr. Arjun Ghosh, Associate Professor, IIT
Delhi, and Dr. Payal Nagpal, Assistant Professor, Janki Devi Memorial College
chaired and also judged different panels of the seminar. There were three
panels in the seminar: Thematic Explorations, Working with Gender, Interface
with Technology and the Contemporary World. Students from University of Delhi, Ashoka
University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and other universities presented papers
in the seminar. A total of 11 papers were presented in the seminar. S Sneha Roy
Choudhury from Jawaharlal Nehru University bagged the first prize in the M Phil
and PhD category for her paper “Death of a Performative Myth: A Study of Sri Krishna Parijatha of North Karnataka”.
Iqra Raza won
the best paper award in BA and MA category for her paper titled “A disaster dramatized: Appropriation of the
apocalyptic myth in Post 9/11 TV drama and the potentiality of the stereotypes
to become archetypes”.

Literary Society (ELS) organised a number of literary and academic activities
in the academic session 2017-18. The ELS lecture series included invited talks
by renowned academics Prof. Sebastian Valassery, Prof. Purushottam Agrawal, and
Dr. Jude Lal Fernando.
Rhapsody’18,
the annual literary fest of English Department, held on 27 February 2018,
featured a panel discussion on Indian science fiction with writer and
documentary producer Dr. Sami Ahmad Khan, and a talk on poetry by Ms. Saumya
Kulshreshtha. Other attractions of the fest include short story writing
competition, micro tales, versification, and literary quiz.
The third edition of annual
national students’ seminar was held on 28 February 2018 on the topic
“Narratives Beyond the Centre: Marginal Characters in World Epics”. Dr. B.
Mangalam delivered the key-note address titled “Epic Battles and Embattled
Women: Narratives of Interrogation and Containment”.

Literary Society of Zakir Husain Delhi College (M) organised various academic
and literary events in the session 2016-2017. In October 2016, Dr. Sanjay
Kumar, Associate Professor, Hansraj College, University of Delhi delivered a
talk on “History of Stage Lights”. The talk discussed various aspects of the
stage lights and the historical evolution of the same since classical Greek
theatres.
The
next event was a talk and discussion on “Arun Kolatkar and His Contemporaries”
on 31 January 2017. D. Anjali Narlekar (Associate
Professor, Department of African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian Languages and
Literatures Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA) delivered the lecture and
enlightened the faculty and students on the multilingual poetic world of Arun Kolatkar
and his Mumbai based contemporaries. On 7 February 2017 Prof. Alan Johnson (Professor, Department of English and
Philosophy, Idaho State University, USA) delivered the lecture on “Forest
Imagery in Modern Indian Literature” initiating discussion on how does
literature help in promoting concern for the nature.
The
highlight of the academic sessionwas Rhapsody ’17: The English Department Fest organized
by the English Literary Society on 18 and 20 February 2017. The annual
fest featuredLiterary Fest consisting various events including literary
competitions and a digital presentation Lyndee Prickitt (Multimedia Writer and
Journalist), and one-day national students’ seminar where students from various
universities and colleges across the country presented papers on “Indian Feminism/s: Writing Liberation in Modern India.”Mridula Garg (Renowned
Hindi Writer) delivered the keynote speech. The ELS also organised “Meet the
Author” event along with the national students’ seminar where award winning
writer Manju Kapur joined Anuradha Marwah for a discussion on the author’s art.
There
are more events scheduled to be held before the conclusion of this session. The
ELS continues to contribute positively to the literary tradition of the college
and looks forward to greater events and achievements in future.

ELS Report for the academic session 2015-2016

English Literary Society of Zakir Husain Delhi College (M) organised many interesting and informative events in the academic session 2015-2016. The first event organized by the society in the month of October 2015. Dr. Gautam Chakravarthy, Associate Professor, Department of English, University of Delhi delivered lecture on “Horace’s contribution to the Satire form”. The talk was a success and guidance for the students.
English Literary Society of Zakir Husain Delhi College (M) organised many interesting and informative events in the academic session 2015-2016. The first event organized by the society in the month of October 2015. The next event was a guest lecture
on Andha Yug, a play written by
Dharamvir Bharati. Dr. Anjan, Department of Hindi, Zakir Husain Delhi College
(M) delivered the lecture on 13th February to enlighten the students
about the text. On 16th of February a screening of The French Lieutenant’s Woman was organised,
which was followed by presentations by students and a discussion on the movie
as well as the novel. As part of the biennial Bhishma Sahani Book Fair in the
college, the ELS organised English Short Story Writing competition on the topic
of “Partition.”
The highlight of the academic year
was the Annual Literary Fest, Rhapsody’16 organized by the English Literary
Society on 29th February 2016. The annual Literary Fest featured a
national student’s seminar where students from universities and colleges across
Delhi presented papers on “The English Sonnet: Evolution and Tradition.” Prof.
Sharmistha Lahiri, retired Prof.
of Italian Studies, Department of Germanic and Romance Studies, University of
Delhi, delivered the keynote speech. Other events like Performance
Poetry, Creative Writing and Quiz etc. were an attraction and the fest was huge
success.
On 19th March 2016, the
ELS organized a creative writing (short story) workshop. Dr. Sami Ahmed Khan, award
winning novelist, and a broadcasting journalist with the All Inida Radio,
enlightened and encouraged the students who aspire to write. The ELS continues
to contribute positively to the literary tradition of the college and looks
forward to greater events and achievements.
